Stu Crum - Applying lessons from sport to leadership

Stu Crum, a former college football hero, rose above injury-laden stints with the NFL and USFL and personal setbacks by facing life head-on and aiming high. Tagged as a winner with a natural gift for leadership, he made his name internationally in key positions with Texaco, Shell Oil, Jiffy Lube, and Bridgestone, and developing a simple, dynamic game plan that he calls intentional living.

The concept of intentional living inherently helps individuals live balanced, well-rounded lives in the face of life’s mounting demands. Every week, Stu writes an email to the diverse group of people he works with. While he cannot know every challenge they may be facing, his “Stu Speak” encouragements boost all desires, because aiming high is universal. He developed his Intentional Playbook over several decades of leadership to help people realise their goals by creating strong, clear intentions.

In this podcast:

  • How Stu’s experience as a kicker taught him about perseverance, resilience, and leadership

  • Why people who reach a professional level in sports or the performing arts may feel lost or without the same rush as before when they decide to stop

  • Learning from failures and the significance of perspective in sports and life

  • The importance of perspective in life and how it is developed over time

  • Why losing perspective, particularly in today's social media-driven world, is dangerous and can lead to making bad decisions and a false sense of reality

  • The evolution of the CEO role and the importance of being a generalist with a deep understanding of various functional areas

  • Having a sense of purpose, making conscious choices, and being accountable for the consequences

  • The concept of intentionality including purpose, priorities, distractions, harmony, self-reflection, responsibility, grit, and a smile
